World Cup Betting: Germany vs. Portugal- June 16th, 2014

The early kick off on Monday afternoon is going to be a game that many have anticipated since the World Cup draw was originally announced. It’ll be two top teams in the world in Germany against Portugal. There are obviously plenty of things to watch in this match-up, and many people are actually picking the German side as serious contenders to win the 2014 World Cup. Portugal on the other side is looking to advance out of this tough group, but they are definitely a team to watch moving forward. This is just game one of course though, and while Portugal has a ton of talent, you can bet that one man will get the bulk of the attention. This game starts up at Noon EST.

Germany has a ton of talent across their roster, and watching them in the build up to this World Cup has been fun. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Germans decide to mark up Ronaldo though. I think the player who gets to draw that tough match-up will be Philipp Lahm, as he’s one of the top defenders in the world. Germany does have some injuries that they are dealing with though, including Marcos Reus, which should mean that Thomas Muller will likely start. There are so many possible options, and Bastian Schweinsteiger is also dealing with an injury as well.

Consensus

It simply seems as though this game will be a tough one to call, with injuries hitting both sides of the pitch. The biggest issue of all though has to be Ronaldo, because if he’s not at 100% then the Portuguese are automatically going to lose a massive part of their team. Portugal simply isn’t as deep as Germany is, and I think that’ll turn out to be a huge problem for them in this game, especially in a match like this where the heat could really get the best of a team.

The match-ups are going to be big, and while I think Lahm is a great defender, I believe that he’ll be able to slow down the Portugal attack with a little bit of help from the rest of the German defense. The odds on this game feature Germany as a favorite with odds of +114 to win, while Portugal is +270 to win.

Tough game to call, but I think Germany is too talented and too prepared for this match-up. I’m taking the Germans to win it 2-1.
